I like the placement of all the key elements in this image. The high horizon really works for me, supporting the rule of thirds. The placement of the boat also works well.
I really like the simplicity that you have achieved through the monochromatic look and the sparest of elements included in the frame.
On my monitor I notice some softness. While a tack sharp image would work, somehow this softness (maybe not there in the original) contributes to a dreamy feeling.
Keep posting, Duncan.

Duncan, This is an excellent capture. Wonderful sunset reflecting on the water. Excellent silhouettes of the birds flying passed and great action of birds flying over the boat. I would maybe just try to sharpen it just a tad. But overall this is an excellent sunset photo. Marilyn

nice tranquil scene. Maybe a bit greyish but such is natural light.
You might want to experiment with depth of field here, the background is just out of focus, having it either completely defocussed or completely sharp would have been better.

Hi Duncan, This is a stunning image. You have captured wonderful elements here. The sky has a lovely dream feel to it. The sun is beautifully exposed without being burnt. The birds give a nice flow and movement to the image and the warm colours are superb. It's a shame the boat wasn't a sailboat as it would have given a nicer mood but that is out of your control. A beautiful image very well seen and a timely shot. Great work.
Cheers - Ann

As Hillary said, the uniformity is great. It looks as though the water and sky would run together if you took out the opposite shore. I'm usually not a fan of high-horizon composition, however you make it work marvelously. Cheers!

I love the uniformity of the color and how it makes the silhouette of the boat stand out all the more. The subtle patterns on the water are also incredibly interesting and really add to the photograph. Nicely captured.

Good job Duncan! If I were to say anything about this image, it would be that it is a little soft, maybe out of focus or just soft, margaret did a nice job with the photoshop, but of course your first port of call is getting the basics right. The composition is nice, the lense you used gave you a lovely blurred background and brought the cat out much more.
I'm still learning, only had my SLR about 6 months!
Keep posting images!!!

Pretty darn good for a first effort! I find that the hardest thing to remember is to think about the background before snapping. In this case you nicely blurred your backround with a fast lens, wide open. Good composition. Great effort to get in so close.

THis looks like a very good start Duncan. I like the colour tones and the angle. WOuld perhaps have benefitted from having the ears all in, to give a more balanced shape. Don't know if you use any PS type programme, or indeed not want any adjustments made to images, so hope you wont be offended - I have done a little sharoening to try and bring out more detail, in the lovely coat and eyes. You have a good eye! Wonderful debut here. I love the shallow depth of feild, makes him(or her) stand out that much more. The color is good too, nicely saturated.
