About East along the rue de Rivoli, at the Place des Pyramides, this gilded statue of Joan of Arc dominates the intersection, near the place where she was martyred. (Traffic was a challenge!)

Yes, Pankaj, you're absolutely right about the centering of the subject. I did have two considerations, however: 1.) Otherwise the statue would be backed by the very busy architecture when seen from an angle. (I have a LOT of those!) Of course having the gold against the blue was decisive. 2.) From an artistic historic standpoint, the statue was placed dead center in the intersection, and I liked the formality of the making it as symmetrical as possible. I see your point also about the dof. I really oversharpened and oversaturated it to give that "postcard" look--not my usual preference. Good points--Thanks. I find it very helpful to look carefully and re-evaluate my choices. This is a great way to make me do it. --g

I liked the way the statue stands out against the blue sky and the gold which could have been difficult to capture is also showing in the right tones.
Otherwise a very appealing concept except for the positioning of the statue in the absolute center which i guess again would have been due to traffic, tell me if i am right ?

Another thing, i would have wished for little more DOF as in absence of that, there's slight cut-outishness in the statue.

Regards
Pankaj Arora

Thanks so much, Ken. This is yet another that I made on my visit in June. Then I went to Ireland--those pictures soon! --g

George,

Wonderful image. The blue sky behind is so effective. Beautiful composed. Joan of Arc will be very pleased to frame this one !

I see you still nostalgic of Paris. Who wouldn't be for it a such beautiful city.

regards,
ken.

Roger--I quite agree about the color, but who are we among so many? ;-) This was something of an exercise inspired by the drama of the subject. Sometimes a cliché is impossible to resist! Even the title is a bit tongue-in-cheek. I looked at the original and discovered that I didn't straighten it at all. (I do notice that the base of the statue is slightly askew.) Thanks for the good comments . . . --gb

Really cool George. I think the saturation works well here also. I love the "V" framing of the sky that leads you down to the statue. I might have cropped just a little off the top and bottom , but it is a dramatic shot that takes you right there. Nice. -mm

From the thumbnail a sense of being run down by her. The towering effect of her over the buildings is awesome.

I'm not a fan of over-saturated colours but I must say the strong gold of the statue and the deep blue sky look just right, nicely framed by the much darker buildings in shadow. To get the latter's verticals straight despite the low eye position w.r.t. this photo, did you correct them in PhotoShop or take it level and crop away the foreground?

Mille fois J'ai passe en face de cette statue de Jean D'arc, toujours avec reverence, mais jamais avec l'emotion avec laquelle je regarde ton photo. Extraordinare. Felicitations.Salvador

It does look like a postcard, have you tried selling it? As you say this style of image is still popular despite all attempts to change it.

Hi George,

well seen and done. the strong sky color shines, and the golden rider works very well as an eye catcher.

Yes, Carlos, I pumped up the saturation and contrast deliberately for the effect. Sometimes a cliché is impossible to resist! And there were many cars to duck around to get a quick shot at this time of day. --g

Well framed George - certainly has the ?look? of a postcard ! I know what you mean about the challenging traffic in this spot.
