About This is my first night photo ever. I am very interested in learning how to take night photos. I am new to photography, so please provide any advice or criticism you may have. The photo was taken from my boat, which explains the water below the skyline.

Hi Ben, I love Seattle and you've done a great job here. Maybe you should try some shots just before dark while there is still some colour in the sky - just adds a little more interest IMO. Looking forward to seeing more of your work : )

Do I get bonus points if I gesture wildly and point to the Space Needle at the right? ;)

Boats, by the way, are the worst possible platform for night photography (unless its as big as Paul Allen's boat). You want a tripod for all night shots. If you lack one, be sure to set your camera down on a solid surface, and then use your self-timer. That prevents your squeezing the shutter from moving the camera.

Also, when you have a choice, shoot wide angle, and physically get the camera closer to the subject for night shots if you dont' have a tripod.

...just some thoughts.
Great shot, man!

Benjamin,
I just looked at your photo again and noticed that the photo was taken from a boat. I failed to read that before. You probably know that a tripod would be of no value.

Benjamin, I think this is excellent fot your first attempt. I have been shooting at night for several years. My first attempt was not nearly as good. I do agree with the crop suggestion. As far as sharpness, of course use a GOOD tripod. Use a cable release and flex it (curl) slightly to keep from transferring vibs to the camera. Beware of wind. Remember in a shot like this there is movement in the water and there is movement in the cityscape. Higher iso to allow a faster shutter speed will help. You can add weight to your tripod in various ways such as tying sandbags to the center post and letting it hang to absorb some vibration. There are optimum apertures for any lens. Some experimentation will help. Good luck.

Hugo says ppdix has a point. Good crop suggestion, but a very good exposure forms the basis. Very well captured,

Cheers,

Hugo

That's a very good point about the cropping. It looks a lot better with the top and bottom cropped out. Anyone have any ideas about how to get more sharpness?

Must be nice to be in a boat in front of this magnificent view.

Good job Ben! I would have cropped the extra blackness for a more panoramic feel like the attached photo...
