About Vermillion Cliffs, Arizona/Utah. Compositionally one of the strongest images I've ever had the chance to capture. Naturally streaked clouds complimenting striations in the sandstone. 2-stop hard grad, polarizer, PS work limited to resize/sharpen.

The "Cloud Gods" are very kind to you! Don't know how many trips to AZ without a single cloud in the sky. This area is one of my favorites in the state! Another STUNNER!

Thank you for sharing the information on your polarizer filter. I didn't get the reply meant for me until I looked up your name to view your images. I'll be sure to get that polarizer in the very near future.

Timecatcher does have the best landscape photographers. You belong with the best and are in good company.

Marc -- Nice capture. Now you're shooting in my backyard . . . I've spent a lot of time shooting just North of the Vermillion Cliffs, in the Zion and Capitol Reef areas. When I was last into photography (early nineties), I spent a great deal of time shooting in Northern Arizona. This shot is really good. I like your composition w/the leading lines on the foreground formation leading my eyes into the diagonal line between the formations.

Beautiful image, Marc!
We were up near this area in late November of last year. Got there late in the day, the sun was already down, so never got a chance to actually venture in... maybe next trip to Az.

Best regards,
Bob

Thank you for answering my questions Marc. I did read that this one was a film shot but I read elsewhere that you do often shoot digital as well so thought I may as well ask my questions here on this thread.

I was under the impression that RAW format did in fact give a warmer image and I have been experimenting with RAW lately but haven't been happy with my RAW images so I'm leaning more towards the high res JPGs again. Perhaps I'm not ready and just don't enough about the post processing of RAW to go there yet so I will continue to practice with the JPGs for now. Thank you for taking the time to help me with your advice. Your work is outstanding.

Cheers - Ann :)

Every time you post I sit with my mouth open for a minute...or five. I don't have enough knowledge to offer a technical critique or comment but, I can say that I am thrilled you found your way to uf...every one of your images is breathtaking! Thanks for the pleasure!

Ann, thank you for your comments. Yes, the landscape did indeed slope slightly though I have often considered making an adjustment to correct the illusion.

This image was captured on Velvia film, but most of my digital shots are captured in both RAW and JPEG at the same time. RAW does not offer any "warmth" advantages over JPEG. I generally process RAW only when significant correction needs to be made to a particular shot. I do keep all RAW images so I have a lossless backup should I ever need/want to use it. Shooting JPEG can often deliver a more appealing landscape image with less processing time. It is very advantageous to use systems that allow for both captures simultaneously.

I'm so glad you have photos of the Southwest zones as there is so much beauty in the red rock formations of those areas. All those beautiful colours, textures and shapes against the wild desert skies. Photographed and presented beautifully here at it's best. Dare I ask but is there an ever so slight tilt downward to the left in the horizon or is it an optical illusion? You do always get the best light in your images. I'm assuming all your images are taken at sunrise or sunset? So much warmth. Oh - one more question...do you always shoot in RAW format as all your images have a beautiful warmth which is always present in RAW images? Another Stunning image Marc.

Cheers - Ann :)

Lisa, you will require a circular polarizer for applications involving todays AF systems. They are practically the only ones sold today. Specificly I used a Hoya HMC Pro1 77mm.

Paul, thanks. I can appreciate others artistic renditions and 'special effects' in some instances, but I do not personally manipulate my images to the point of non-reality. Honestly, this image would not have the same impact for me if I had somehow created the sky artificially.

Everything in this photo in my eyes makes this perfect.

I was think tonight of purchasing a polarizing filer and after seeing this image I have decided to get one. Did you use a circular polarizing filter on this or I believe the other is a linear.

The rock formations of the sandstone are so rich and vibrant. Love the clouds with the streaks. The texture of the rocks and their lines looks like a match made in heaven with the clouds.

Wonderful composition. 10+!

I'm sure an award of some kind will be on this photo in no time at all.

Congratulations!

Yeah, the lines in this shot are surrealistically strong, Marc! I LOVE that sky, man. I had to read to see what cool effect you'd applied to the sky...and was thrilled to see this was the scene before you.
WOW!
