  Q. Adobe Lightroom question -can you crop & rotate?

Asked by Mary Sue Hayward   Donor  (K=17558) on 10/7/2007
I have recently switched to a Mac, and need to replace my photo editing software. I'm considering Adobe Lightroom (as well as Aperture and PS-CS3). An article on Lightroom, possibly written during its Beta release, said that it was not possible to crop and rotate in Lightroom. That would be a deal breaker for me, as I use those functions more often than I care to admit! There's been at least one or two updates released, so maybe that functionality has been added.

Can any Lightroom experts out there tell me if you can crop & rotate with the program? ALSO, I'm very open to recommendations with any of the programs: Lightroom, Aperture, or the big daddy, PS-CS3.

Thanks!

Yes, Mary Sue. Lightroom does this and more: crop, colour balance, rotate, sharpen, scale, print etc.

Thanks, Jan. After I posted, I learned that it was possible to download free trials of both Lightroom and PS-CS3. I'm playing with those now, and learning a lot. I've not looked that closely at Aperture yet. In the past I have used PS-7, and I like that level of functionality. However, since I do not have the same demands that a pro photographer might have, a smaller program might work just as well.

Thanks for your reply.

By the way, PS CS3 and Lightroom are companion products and Lightroom has numerous modules but does not have the editing power of PS CS3.
If you would like to consider a lower cost but very powerful photo editor you should look at ULEAD Photoimpact 12. This is a phenomenal product that does almost as much as Photoshop and has some library management features, too. It can also read and write photoshot .psd format as well as RAW, JPEG, TIFF, etc. Lots of effects as well as basic editing and a very nice photo framing library.

Thanks for the guidance, Jan. Based on my experience with the trial version of PS CS3, I'm probably going with that program. I still might get Lightroom too - it is a nice organizational tool, plus has good features. And as you said, they are companion products.

Your comments have been helpful. Thanks for your input!
