  Q. Billboard Photography

Asked by Pat McCowan    (K=0) on 11/12/2003
What size format would you recommend for high quality images to be used on a billboard? I read the previous responses to a similar question, but feel like I want more input on this topic. I have used large format cameras in the past, but not recently. Any information would be appreciated.

I have only shot one time for billboard use and was surprised to learn that the quality requirements are actually much lower than for magazine / brochure work. The distance from which billboards are designed to be viewed is so far that it is not so critical.

The billboard I shot for was one of the road side ones, probable 40' x 15' and I used a Canon 1Ds which provided more than enough resolution.

If you are shooting for a similar use, I am quite sure that a 645 or 6x6 format would be fine and the company would likely prefer it in a digital format. Have the lab provide you with a medium to hi-res scan of the selected neg.

Jim
