nicely done Bill the other one (5778) is the best of the three but very big improvement demonstrated.......a new level and a new height to your bar.....

Agree with Detlef on the hands especially since the color of the hands is different to the face but otherwise...
GFJ....Great ******* Job...

Some good strong diagonals - nice framing and I agree with Gary - would also have made a good b & w. The tones blend well to create an effective image.

Warming

Since this was an overcast day the light both inside and outside without the flash was cool.

How do you warm the image up?

When I try this in PS, I go to image, curves and boost the red. How do you make the judgement call?

Many times when I do this, everything comes out pink and yet I think I've tweaked it just a little.

Great capture, Bill. Shows that us Digital guys can hang in there with the film "dinosaurs :-) (No, I'm not trying to start a digital vs film war again!! I hope you're as impressed with the D30 as I am as with both have the same style preferences.) Ditto Arties comment about a little warming which will take this from "great" to "excellent". Well done.

I'm with you Bill, the contrasts of softly out of focus side through the window next to the crisp detail of the open side it very interesting IMO. I was sorry I didnt get to see this one on Live the other night, but this was well worth the wait! Very nice.

I have to agree with Artie, this image tells it's own story, and leaves me wanting to know more. I really like the framing on this, I wouldnt crop a single pixel.

Alisa,

Not sure what you mean by your crop suggestion. I tried a horizontal crop to eliminate the fence and that did not work at all.

The more I look at this though I think it seems ok.

The fence almost parallels the rise in the stairs and is not that distracting.

Thanks for the suggestions though.

Bill, I really like this one. A few technical nitpicks, but really- who cares. I'm not into analyzing pictures and pulling up some sort of "meaning" from them but this is an image that almost demanded I think about it beyond content and aesthetics. Man... there are a bunch of things I want to say about this picture but being sick and sleep deprived I can't quite think of them now... so until that time comes, I'll leave it with 'ooh... i like this one.'

why futz with it...I like the retro, rustic look..the lighting and framing add to the weathered look and feel of it..like the textures of the weathered fence and the rusted pipe on the wall...lettering doesnt look worn out which is weird...shame its abandoned; you could have bought me lunch..looks like a cool place to hang.....

Artie,

Those comments pretty well sum up Alcatraz, a former prison in the San Francisco Bay.

This image really grabbed me emotionally, I'm surprised by the lack of reaction.

Maybe the don't realize the foreground is all dark, cold water and the abandoned prison is completely surrounded by water.

One of the stories that stick in my mind about this place is that the really hard core criminals were kept in solitary confinement cells that looked through barred windows across the cell block to the lights, sounds and smells of San Francisco - so close and yet so far.

I really like these kinds of images. Especially ones that are even more abstract. The textures, differences (metal chain/lock, weathered wood), and worn. Looks like this door's been around for a while. Of course, maybe this was taken at a beach house in Carmel, and it's only taken a year to look like this. In any case, it's the kind of image I'd like to have on my wall.

Thnks for the suggestions. I chose not to shoot the scene because it was mid day, with bright sunlight and the buildings were stark white.

I may try and crop to just the reflection and see what happens.

thanks

you handled it about the only way you could unless you used a large diffuser over the frame but that would have also affected the reflection......the interior of the frame looks like a Wheyth..I would say turn around and shoot the scene it looks rather interesting.....
the other alternative is to crop out the entire framing and leave the scene only; it looks like a reflection so I dont think the frame is really necessary anyway.....

Love it, dark, moody and balanced. the light bouncing off the water and the bridge add to the balance, telling the story.
A very well executed picture, I would have it on my wall.

Hey - thanks everyone. A little background on this photo.

Each year San Jose and some major sponsors host a free jazz concert. About 140,000 people attend. This year there were 8 stages going with a large diversity of styles and muscians. This group was the opening act on Friday night. They really got the audience going. They the area in front of the stage is open for dancing. They allow photographs.

The lighting is stage spotlights. All of the shots from this series are candid an unposed. This image was not cropped in post production. Photoshop manipulation was minimal. Only levels adjusted to increase contrast and an unsharp filter applied.

I wanted to capture the intensity of the live performance.

These muscians get one chance (set) to make their impression. Most have never played to this large a crowd. I felt the same way - one chance to get the shot.

thanks again.

Everyone is absolutely right. I am so impressed with the composition and lighting. This image captures the whole feel of the music and the intensity of the musician. You did a fantastic job! Did the bass player know he was being photographed?
