Thank you Hugo. I struggled with the centered composition too and came to the same conclusion. Mark.

Very nice indeed. Wonderful contrast, both in the subject and the lighting/exposure. Well done. Mark.

Hi Marcy; thanks for the comments. there is no real secret. This shot was taken as follows:

1. I set up the dandelion in a sun room in front of a piece of black card. I chose the sun room as we have floor to ceiling windows on 3 walls. Lots of light and no really strong shadows, as although it was bright it was quite cloudy.

2. I was using my Canon 10D and a 100mm macro lens.

3. I set up the tripod about 18in (450mm) from the subject.

4. I made a point of setting the white balance on the camera to custom mode, using a piece of white card, to avoid colour casts.

5. I set the ISO rating of the camera to minimum (100 ISO) to minimise noise.

6. I metered off my palm, using fully manual mode. I chose a narrow aperture to ensure front to back sharpness.

7. I shot only one take, in RAW. I used a remote release as the metering called for 0.3 sec exposure at f/16.

8. Back on the PC I made 3 adjustments. I altered the levels to improve the blacks and whites (did not need to do much). I used the unsharp mask to improve the sharpness and also cropped to the 10x8 ratio which I prefer.

I hope this is helpful; I was pleased with the outcome of the shot.

Best wishes,
Mark.

Wonderful use of selective desaturation, which I think is a technique that sometimes does not work well at all. In this case, it is great. The center of the sunflower seems a little underexposed though, or maybe the image size is just losing the details; I think the picture would be even better if we could see more here. In any case, you should be proud of this shot. Well done.

I agree about the lack of a border. For some reason I expected the site to put a border on, and it was too late after that to "fix" it. I may do a repost later on. Thanks. Mark.

I love the colours and the clouds. Would have been wonderful to see a whole series taken from here as dawn broke fully. If you have that available, it would be nice to see on usefilm.

Absoultely amazing shot and stitch. The clarity or the reflections is brilliant. I would love to see this in more resolution.

By the way, I was surprised to see comments on my portfolio from another McGloughlin. It is very rare to find someone with the same spelling. Here in Cork, Ireland, we are the only ones in the phone book!

Massimo: I have a version with PS super saturated colours. It does look good and in fact, when I looked at your portfolio, it is quite similar!!

Luca: I started using the auto settings, but over the past few months I have started using manual only. This was taken in bright midday sun, so I used f/4.5 with 1/5000 shutter speed. I have a 1GB microdrive, so I use the 6MP FINE mode, which is 2.2Mb per image. I've never run out of space!!

Matej: I agree with your comment. The chaotic growth is in fact another line, running horizontally in the frame. I have many shots from this scene - I will review and look for something better. Thanks.

I was on a farm. I was less than 3 feet from him. His head was moving all over the place though - I was 10 minutes waiting for him to get in frame. This guy is gonna be meat some day... pity.

I really like this - the presentation as much as the photo. I intend to use this style of presentation sometime; thanks for the inspiration.

I was looking at several of these in a green area near my home the other day and wondered what I could make of them. This is brilliant. Very well done. I'm sure I would not have done this. Mark.

This is my favorite kind of shot at the moment. I would like to have seen the technical details of the shot and may have suggested a longer exposure for even smoother water, but this is a great picture. Is there a little over-exposure in the centre? I am looking forward to seeing the rest of what you took at this location.

I like the picture. Strong mood and you capture the decay well. It seems a little over exposed in some parts, but that could be my monitor. The grain is effective.

Very attractive macro with good presentation. I am not keen on the pink border, but that is a minor point.
